This book is for executives, practitioners, and project managers who are tasked with the movement of data from old systems to a new repository. It uses a series of steps developed in real life situations that will get the reader from an empty new system to one that is populated, working and backed by the user population. This new edition of the primary text on the subject is updated to take account of changes in technology and the maturing of the market for Data Migration services. The most recent figures suggest that nearly 40% of Data Migration projects are over time, over budget or fail entirely. Using the proven methodology in Practical Data Migration will vastly increase the chances of achieving on time, on budget, and zero defect migrations.
Johny Morris has over twenty years' experience in IT working as a programmer, analyst, project manager and data architect. He has worked for some of the biggest names in IT consultancy including CSC, Logica CMG and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) and has been involved in large-scale migrations at Barclays Bank, National Grid Transco and the BBC.
'For any practitioner faced with the challenge of delivering a successful data migration, this book is an absolute necessity.'
Dylan Jones, Founder, Data Migration Pro/ Data Quality Pro

Comprehensive coverage of how to plan, manage and execute a data migration end to end.

A detailed and well thought through set of processes on the challenging task of data migration. I hope that the industry will embrace this methodology as a standard for Data Migrations. As we hear of more and more expensive failures as a result of 'hanging on to the legacy' for too long, it will become essential that we have a tried and tested method to move our legacy data to more contemporary platforms in a safe and secure way.

As I was recently involved in a project that required a significant amount of data migration I jumped at the opportunity to review this book. Data migration turned out to be one of the longest and most complex parts of the project, ultimately leading to a delay in delivering a new system. [...]

Having read this book I am convinced it would have helped to identify the scale and complexity of the activity involved with data migration, provided me with a methodical approach and ultimately would have made a significant difference to the delivery timescales.
